Entertaining guests is now second nature to the Nugent family, 'The Castle', Modeligo, Cappagh, County Waterford. After 15 years of providing farmhouse accommodation, contacts are wide ranging, repeat business important and referrals many. Over the years, the farmhouse holiday business has contributed well to family income, facilitating the education of family members (four in family) and funding the restoration and maintenance of a big house.
Joan and Emmet Nugent, are representing Munster in the AIB Agri-tourism Awards. 'The Castle' is in fact a spacious farmhouse that - retains attractive features of the original building, dating back to the early 1500's. The gables have been stripped to expose the original stone and the old arches are incorporated to good effect When Joan and Emmet Nugent moved into 'The Castle' it was semi-derelict with ivy trailing throughout.
Given a relatively isolated but scenic location, Joan Nugent realised that she had to offer high standards to attract guests. Over the years it has been a constant path of improvement and reinvestment. Now there are five guest bedrooms, all of which are en suite, and spacious dining and sitting rooms. There is also a tennis court and ponies to entertain children. Joan says 'the farmhouse holiday business is not just about B and B, our guests want a relaxed rural atmosphere, good food and cleanliness'. The little extras are appreciated - access to the kitchen to make tea, fresh flowers, white sheets etc. Most guests avail of the evening meal. There is emphasis on variety and quality of food - a range of cereals, fruit, yoghurt, cheese, pan-cakes etc for breakfast. Joan has attended the Ballymaloe cookery school.
For the last ten years 'The Castle' has featured as a port of call for CIE tours - tea and scones on offer. This is a welcome sideline and has allowed faster growth of the accommodation side of the business. The visitors appreciate the opportunity to visit a farmhouse and experience 'the real Ireland'.
There are 120 acres of fertile land adjoining 'The Castle'. Dairying is pursued - the 70 cow herd averages 1100 gallons on 0.5 tonnes of concentrates. Over the years cow numbers have been increased and facilities extended and improved. Last year there was substantial investment in cubicles, tanks and scrapers. Emmet Nugent comments 'Initially, I was hesitant about keeping guests. Now I enjoy them and spend time with them each evening. Our social life is in our own home.' Emmet is a keen historian and guests are often interested in local lore.
