Things To Do In West Waterford

The Castle Country House accommodation is ideally situated to experience some of Waterford's, and Ireland's most stunning scenery. Our bed and breakfast is centrally located for all the towns and villages of West Waterford. Cappoquin, Lismore, Dungarvan, Villierstown, Tallow, Ballymacarbry, Ardmore and Youghal are all within 20 minutes of our bed and breakfast accommodation. We are perfectly located for exploring the Nire Valley. Information on Waterford's many walkways, and scenic drives has been collated and provided in our visitor's pack available to all our guests. Information on other local activities such as golf, fishing, horse riding and rally driving is also provided and all booking can be made through us. Similarly, we can advise you on places to eat (we are centrally located to five top quality restaurants recommended by the Bridgestone Guides' 100 best), local entertainment and cinema. Fishing

The Castle Country House is ideally situated to enjoy the finest fishing in the county. Close to both sea and inland waterways we can make all the necessary arrangements for you This includes arranging tackle hire and providing you with a packed lunch.
Rivers, Lakes and Local Clubs - The River Blackwater draws dedicated game anglers to hunt wild salmon, sea trout and brown trout. Coarse anglers also find the river rewarding for roach, dace, rudd and tench. Cappoquin, Ballyduff and Lismore are the major angling centres for the river. The River Tar and River Nire are both renowned game angling rivers, where the villages of Ballymacarbry and Newcastle service the angler. The River Suir is another of Waterford's great game angling rivers served by Waterford City, Portlaw, as well as the Co. Tipperary towns of Carrick-on-Suir and Clonmel. The lakes around Tramore hold stocks of brown trout as, indeed do the River Colligan, River Finisk and River Brickey near Dungarvan.
Deep Sea Angling - There are Deep Sea Angling Boats for hire at Dunmore East, Dungarvan, Ardmore and Ring providing wreck, reef and shark fishing. Rods and tackle are available for hire. See Dungarvan Charter Boats for more information.
Shore Angling - Shore Anglers will find the great variety of species very satisfying near Dunmore East, Cheekpoint and Passage East in the east, near Dungarvan and Ardmore in the west, and, indeed all along the magnificent coastline.

Golf and Pitch & Putt

For the golfing enthusiast Dungarvan has three 18 hole golf courses, some with breathtaking views. There is also a pitch and putt club in the town centre. There is also a 9 hole golf course just nine miles from The Castle Country House at Lismore, and another 18 hole golf course at Clonmel. Golfing club and equipment hire can also be arranged.

Equestrian

Free access to beaches, moorland, valleys, mountain and riverside tracks allows the trail rider and the pony treker to enjoy the stunning, ever-changing scenery of Waterford from the back of a horse. Experienced riders will enjoy a week or a weekend trek, where every day brings new vistas and different terrain to challenge their horsemanship. Day visitors can enjoy a day, half-day or even 1-hour treks on horses suited to their confidence and ability. Arrangments for fox hunting can also be made through us. Rides in and around the Comeragh Mountains can be enjoyed from Colligan Equestrian Centre, Colligan, near Dungarvan and from Finisk Valley Riding Centre, Kilmolash Bridge, near Cappoquin,

Walking

Comeragh Mountains - The walker can explore the folklore, geology, flora and fauna on conducted Nire Valley Walks in the Comeragh Mountains, just eight miles from our doorstep. A Comeragh Mountain Walking Festival is held annually in October. The walks are graded and are led by very experienced guides.
East Waterford - The Doneraile Walk is a scenic coastal walk in Tramore. Tramore is famous for it's 5km sandy beach and sand dunes. The East Munster Way extends from Carrick-on-Suir, west/south-west to Clogheen, a distance of 70 kms. The South Leinster Way, which can also be joined at Carrick-on-Suir runs north-east for 102 km via Piltown and the valleys of the Nore, Barrow and Slaney to Kildavin.
West Waterford - Ardmore has a published Cliff Walk. Way-marked, long distance trails include St. Declan's Way, an ancient pilgrims' path of some 94km which runs from Ardmore through Cappoquin, Lismore, Ardfinnan and Cahir to Cashel. Riverside walks include the Glenshelane River Walk, a wilderness trek through spectacular scenery in the Knockmealdown Mountains and the 8km long Kilmaloo Walk at Clashmore. There is a published Dungarvan Town Trail and there are guided walks from the Tourist Office in summer. Conducted Heritage Trail Walking Holidays are led by a knowledgeable guide and cover the coast of Waterford as well as other areas in the south-east of Ireland.

Water Sports

With a coastline stretching the length of the county and an abundance of rivers, Waterford offers a glorious natural environment for the water sports enthusiast as well as lively and tranquil Seaside Resorts & River Valley Resorts. The beaches at Ardmore, Bunmahon, Clonea and Counsellor's Strand, Dunmore East are all EU Blue Flag Beaches and are renowned for their superb water quality as well as their very pretty settings. Dunmore East Adventure Centre and The Blackwater Adventure Centre offer water and land based activities, while there are many opportunities to sail, wind surf, canoe and water ski. Diving, PADI Diving instruction. Powerboat instruction and Dive Charter is available at Ardmore and Dungarvan.

Scenic Drives

The Comeragh Mountains - The Comeragh Mountain and Nire Valley Drives embrace the scenery and splendour of the mountains which form the spine of County Waterford. Highlights on this drive include pre-historic sites, standing stones, fulachta and cairns at Kilbrien, Mothel Abbey and Mahon Falls.
The Dungarvan & The Copper Coast Drive - The Dungarvan & The Copper Coast Drive embraces the panoramic seascapes, cliffs, bays and coves between Dungarvan and the major seaside resort of Tramore as well as more intimate Seaside Resorts with Blue Flag Beaches, Clonea and Bunmahon. Highlights include Dungarvan Town Trail, Dungarvan Museum, Augustinian Abbey, Stradbally, Dunhill Castle, and Matthewstown Gallery Grave.
The Copper Coast - Fenor to Stradbally - Just West of Tramore lies one of the most spectacular coastal stretches in Ireland. Known as the copper Coast, due to the tradition of Copper Mining in the area. This coastal stretch passes through five small villages Fenor, (Forest, Lakes, Fenor Bog, Kilfarrasy Beach), Annestown, (sweeping beach), Boatstrand with its little harbour, (swimming and diving), Bunmahon (Mining trail, geological park, Blue Flag Beach, cliff walks panoramic views) and Stradbally ( award winning picturesque village, sandy coves, woodlands, crystal clear water). Just off the route is the traditional village of Dunhill, where good food and traditional music abound.
East Waterford Gaultier Coast Drive - The East Waterford Gaultier Coast Drive is a beautiful peninsular drive contained by Waterford Harbour on one side and magnificent Tramore Bay on the other. Highlights include the very picturesque resort of Dunmore East, the protected beach at Woodstown, the scenic fishing village of Cheekpoint, the estuary car ferry port of Passage East and Harrison Megalithic Tomb.
Lismore & The Vee Drive - Lismore & The Vee Drive is a spectacularly beautiful drive where the scenery climbs and dips and changes constantly. Highlights include Lismore Heritage Town, The Vee viewpoint, the gardens and pet farm round Clogheen, Mount Mellary Abbey and Cappoquin House & Gardens.
Gaeltacht & Galltacht Drive - The Gaeltacht & Galltacht Drive explores the cultural contrasts between the Gaeltacht (Gaelic speaking) Ring area (An Rinn) and the planted and fortified castle lands along the Blackwater, with their strong Anglo-Norman and English influences. Highlights include the major historic ecclesiastical site at Ardmore (Round Tower & Cathedral), the neat estate town of Villierstown, Dromana House, Bridge & Gardens and the vineyard near Cappoquin.
Suir Valley Drive - The Suir forms a beautiful boundary between Co. Waterford and Co. Tipperary and this drive exploits all its charms. Highlights include Ormond Castle & Manor House and the Heritage Centre, Carrick-on-Suir, Curraghmore Estate, Portlaw, Mount Congreve Gardens, Killoteran and the Tipperary South Riding County Museum, Clonmel.
